How Long Does a Home Interior Project Actually Take?

“How long will it take?” is usually answered optimistically, because the honest answer loses projects. We would rather give you the real one, because a client who knows the shape of the timeline makes faster decisions — and client decisions are the single biggest variable in it.

Here is how long a home interior project actually takes in Delhi NCR, stage by stage, and what makes it longer.

Elements like this are made off site over weeks — lead time, not build time, sets the pace.

The short version

  • 2–3 BHK apartment, 1,200–1,800 sq ft — 5 to 7 months total
  • 4 BHK or large apartment, 2,500–3,500 sq ft — 7 to 10 months
  • Independent house or villa, 5,000–7,000 sq ft — 10 to 14 months for interiors alone
  • Farmhouse, ground-up — 24 to 30 months including construction

Those are from first meeting to moving in, including design. Site work alone is roughly 60 per cent of it.

Stage by stage

1. Brief and survey — 2 to 3 weeks

Understanding how you live, measuring the space accurately, checking structure and services, agreeing scope and budget. Short, but skipping it costs months later.

2. Concept design — 3 to 5 weeks

Planning, spatial strategy, material direction, early views. Usually one or two rounds of revision.

This is the first place clients add time. A week to review a concept is reasonable; three weeks of circulating it among family is three weeks added to handover. Decide who has a say before you start, not during.

3. Design development — 4 to 6 weeks

Everything gets resolved: joinery internals, ceiling levels, lighting positions, bathroom layouts, final materials. Samples are ordered and approved.

Imported material samples can take 3 to 6 weeks to arrive on their own. If you are considering imported stone or specialist finishes, start looking during concept, not after.

4. Working drawings and tender — 3 to 4 weeks

The full drawing set goes out, contractors quote, quotes are compared and negotiated, the contract is signed. Society NOCs and permissions are also chased here.

Some Delhi societies take four to six weeks to approve interior work. Apply early.

5. Site work — the bulk of it

For a 3 BHK apartment, roughly:

  • Demolition and civil — 2 to 3 weeks
  • Plumbing and electrical first fix — 3 weeks
  • Waterproofing and curing — 2 weeks (cannot be rushed)
  • Flooring — 3 to 4 weeks
  • False ceiling — 2 to 3 weeks
  • Joinery manufacture, off site — 6 to 10 weeks, running in parallel
  • Joinery installation — 3 to 4 weeks
  • Painting and polish — 3 weeks
  • Second fix, fittings, sanitaryware — 2 weeks
  • Snagging and cleaning — 2 weeks

These overlap, which is why a 30-week list becomes 14 to 18 weeks on site — but only with proper sequencing. Poor sequencing is what turns a six-month job into a nine-month one.

6. Furniture, furnishings and styling — 2 to 4 weeks

Custom sofas take 6 to 10 weeks to make, so they are ordered mid-project, not at the end. Curtains are measured only after the false ceiling is up, then take 3 to 4 weeks.

What actually causes delays

Client decisions. Comfortably the largest factor. Every pending selection — a tile, a handle, a paint shade — blocks a trade. We have seen a project lose five weeks to an undecided bathroom floor.

Changes after work starts. Moving a wall in week six means redoing electrical, plumbing and ceiling. Two weeks gone, plus cost.

Material lead times. Imported stone: 8 to 12 weeks. Specialist lighting: 6 to 10. Imported sanitaryware: 8 or more. Order these at design stage.

Society restrictions. Many Delhi and Gurgaon societies allow work only 9–6 on weekdays, ban noisy work in certain months, and restrict lift use. That can extend a build by 20 per cent.

Monsoon. Polish and paint struggle in high humidity; stone laying slows. July and August are simply less productive.

Festivals. Diwali and Holi cost a week or more each as labour goes home. Around Chhath, northern labour can be away for two to three weeks.

Too many parallel trades. Counter-intuitive, but crowding a site slows it down. Trades get in each other’s way and quality drops.

How to make it faster

Finish design before starting site. A fully resolved set is the single biggest accelerator. Starting on site with the design half done feels faster for a month and costs three.

Decide who decides. One decision-maker, or two who agree quickly. Design by committee is slow by construction.

Order long-lead items first. Stone, lighting, sanitaryware, custom furniture — all on day one of site work.

Accept one change window. Agree that changes are welcome until a fixed date and expensive after it. This is fair to everyone and keeps the job moving.

Do not squeeze the snagging. The last 5 per cent is what you notice every day. Rushing it is the most visible false economy in any project.

What a good programme looks like

Ask your designer for a written programme with stage dates, and a monthly update against it. Not because dates will hold exactly — they never do — but because a slip you learn about in week nine can be absorbed, and one you discover in week twenty-two cannot.

At Pochē Aesthetics we issue a programme before site work begins and report against it, because a project that is honest about time is a project you can plan your life around. If you want a realistic timeline for your own home, tell us about it. You may also want the cost side of the same question or our scope of work.
